Death: Well here we are, she looks happy doesn't she. *sighs*
Bob (Deaths best friend): What's your problem?
D: Oh I don't know, she just seems a little too full of life. Seems a bit of a waste.
B: Come on, you've done this a million times before.
D: A bit more than a million times I think.
B: Exactly, so why is this one any different?
D: I've seen her around before. And to be frank I wanted to snuff her out right
there and then. She was so annoyingly up-beat. But now it comes to it...I don't know
I suppose I've always been a little afraid of happiness. Always seemed a little insane
to me, especially in this world.
B: Well you haven't really experienced your fair share of it have you?
D: No, the job isn't very conducive to merriment I'll admit.
B: But you should know better than anyone that happiness is fleeting at best. And
really what right has she to be so happy? There's far more reason to shed a tear
than throw a smile isn't there.
D: Yes I know you're right, but you have to admire someone like that. The people
that pervade this world tend to pull them down before now.
B: Admire? Ridicule would be more appropriate, she'll never get anywhere in life like
that, dog eat dog and all that. No, far better to reserve emotion, and practice cunning.
D: You're really depressing at times. I'm supposed to be Death you know.
B: I seem to have to remind you of that every so often don't I?
D: I mean what's wrong with those two there, why not them instead?
B: For a start you would'nt be doing her any favours. They're her parents.
D: Oh yes. Forgot about that.
B: And that's not the point, in about 40 seconds you'll do your lawnmower act
and that will be an end of it. And her. Simple really.
D: I wonder about you sometimes.
B: *smiles* I didn't know you cared.
D: Well there she goes, award in hand. I really think you're underestimating what we're
doing here. She's got a right to be happy if she wants. Heaven knows there's enough
melodramatics as it is. Let her spread a little joy. The world is bereft of feeling
as it is, it makes the sunshine all the more precious. Depravity is rife, innocence
is not.
B: Well that was touching I must say. How long have you been practising that one?
Unfortunately you're still avoiding the inevitable.
*Sound of Deaths watch beeping*
Time's up, innocence or no.
D: Did I have to time it right in the middle of her speech? She was just getting to a
good part. *shakes head*
*Unsheathes scythe*
*Sweeping noise and darkness*
Return to the roll call.
